Music theory and history classes are designed to develop well-rounded musicians rather than just technical pianists. Lessons include ear training, rhythm, composition, and harmony. The History of Music component connects advances in compositional techniques to cultural context and repertoire. This broader grounding has helped students stand out in competitions, where understanding the music is as important as executing it.
While these group lessons are not required they are encouraged, particularly for students who seek to compete at national or international level.
Advanced students who complete the program are prepared to take the AP Music Theory exam.
For younger learners, custom-designed musical games make it easy to grasp complex ideas in rhythm, harmony, and analysis. These classes ensure that from the very beginning, students build not only technical ability but also the deeper musicianship needed to interpret and perform with confidence.
